Advanced Biologics & Skin Substitutes

Skin substitutes are designed to accelerate wound healing by providing replacement of the extracellular matrix and can be used to promote healing of both acute and chronic wounds.

Skin substitutes are a group of biologic, synthetic, or biosynthetic materials that can provide temporary or permanent coverage of open wounds.  The goal of skin substitutes is to replicate the properties of the normal skin.  They are an important adjunct in the treatment of chronic wounds.

Each skin substitute has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.  The use of skin substitutes is highly personalized with the choice of skin substitute depending upon the type of wound, its etiology, and the skin layers that require replacement.

Tulsa Wound Center accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, BCBS, and Community Care.  Most insurance plans will cover specific skin substitutes.  Preauthorization will be obtained from your insurance prior to the application procedure.

Your physician may choose to treat you with a skin substitute if your healing is delayed or not progressing.  At 4 weeks, advanced treatments, such as skin substitutes are considered if your wound has not contracted by at least 40%.

You may contact Tulsa Wound Center at 918-561-6661 for more information or you can be referred directly by your physician.
